This is an exceptional opportunity to join America’s largest HBCU as the Associate Dean of Research and Innovation of the Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences. N.C. A&T is a strong and growing doctoral, research university currently designated “R2 / high-research activity” in the Carnegie Classification for Institutions of Higher Education. Its growth and development have set it on a course to attain the “R1 / Very High Research Activity” designation – one of several exciting institutional goals that N.C. A&T is pursuing. Building on this momentum, N.C. A&T welcomed this summer James Martin II as Chancellor and accepted an historic $20 million donation The Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences is a shining example of instructional excellence, innovation, and impactful research: a major driver of the university’s success ever since A&T’s inception in 1891.  

The Associate Dean of Research and Innovation (ADRI) is responsible for developing and guiding implementation of the research agenda for the college in alignment with the university strategic goals and will have oversight over all aspects of the college’s research enterprise. As a member of the college leadership team, the ADRI’s role is of critical importance as the university makes progress towards R1 status.  The successful candidate must develop the college’s research infrastructure, including a focus on training graduate students and postdocs. The ADRI is expected to work closely and collaboratively with faculty, department chairs, and staff. 

This is a 12-month tenure-track faculty position reporting to the Dean of the Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop infrastructure for signature research areas in the college

  • Oversight of faculty mentoring on research and scholarship

  • Develop and implement college-level research enrichment initiatives

  • Evaluate funding opportunities for faculty and develop teams for interdisciplinary collaborative research at the institutional, regional, and national levels

  • Work with the Division of Research and Economic Development (DORED) on all aspects of research administration including compliance and financial issues

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Develop the college’s research infrastructure, including a focus on training of graduate students and postdocs

  • Leadership qualities and abilities needed to help the college achieve its vision of being internationally acclaimed for its interdisciplinary and innovative research

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with various internal and external constituencies, promote interdisciplinary research, and work with a culturally diverse population.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Earned doctorate in a discipline aligned with degree programs within the Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences

  • Scholarly accomplishments commensurate with the rank of Associate or Full Professor in their discipline.

  • A record of securing external grant funding for research

  • Minimum of five years conducting independent research and managing research funded programs

  • Familiarity with federal grant finance and compliance issues

  • Experience evaluating research proposals

About the College

The John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences (HCHHS) comprises six departments and the School of Nursing. The HCHHS offers the following undergraduate degree programs: Communication Sciences and Disorders, Health Services Management, Kinesiology, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology. At the graduate level, the College offers four graduate degree programs including the Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies (PA program), Master of Social Work (MSW), Master of Science in Health Psychology, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), and PhD in Social Work. A PhD in Applied Psychology has been approved and is under development. Pending review and approval, a PhD in Sociology is also forthcoming. The HCHHS is also home to the Center of Excellence in Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research (CIHDER), a hub for multidisciplinary research and community engagement efforts to alleviate health inequities.

The HCHHS capitalizes on the synergistic relationships between these departments to develop advanced academic programming, enhance the mentoring of trainees, and conduct collaborative multidisciplinary research and scholastic activity. Social justice and promotion of health equity are integral components of the mission of the college.
