WAMRI Staff Research Director

Job Summary:
The USF Data Institute (USFDI) is looking for an outstanding candidate with expertise in one or more areas related to data science (machine learning, statistics, databases, etc.), and demonstrated experience in software engineering to serve as the Staff Research Director (SRD) of the Wicklow AI Medical Research Initiative (WAMRI). Aimed at candidates with a passion for developing innovative solutions to medical data science problems in multiple domains, this position offers the opportunity for overseeing, administrating and conducting world-class, publishable, applied research.

The USFDI mission is to engage researchers across disciplines in developing and applying advanced methods and tools to real world problems in data-driven science and research. The WAMRI SRD will both plan and execute research, translate research results into solutions with broad application in the sciences, and produce practical applications that will deliver lasting impact across domains. Projects will be sourced through joint collaborations with USFDI affiliate faculty, researchers, graduate students through USFDI leadership

Working in conjunction of the WAMRI committee, the SRD will be charged to build new relationships between public and private organizations and universities, and expand existing research relationships. The core values of WAMRI research is focused on open, reproducible and transferable knowledge at the intersection of Machine Learning, AI and Medicine. Job Requirements:

  • Review and evaluate potential projects for technical merit and feasibility.
  • Mentor and support MS Data Science and BS Data Science students at the USFDI on WAMRI research projects.
  • Grant writing activities to support ongoing research initiatives at WAMRI.
  • Meet with potential collaborators to clarify goals, identify collaboration opportunities and recommend solutions.
  • Advance long-term collaborations with established partners through joint research engagements.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on significant results, both internally and externally,


representing the USFDI/WAMRI in professional manner.
  • Develop materials communicating significant results, best practices and case studies with specific technologies, and documentation for significant software.
  • Collaborate and support the research programs of the full-time faculty and researchers at the USFDI on research programs align with WAMRI research initiatives.
  • Independently conduct research supporting the WAMRI initiative and write up for publication and dissemination as appropriate.


Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering or related computational field.
  • At least three (3) years of programming experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working on interdisciplinary data science problems.
  • Experience in communicating results through writing and presentations, both in and out of one's own discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in software engineering, machine learning and/or advanced statistical methods.


Desired:

  • Graduate Degree, preferably in in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering or related computational field.
  • A successful research track record, especially through collaborations outside one's own field, as evidenced by joint publications, joint grants, and collaborative software outputs
  • Experience participating in open source software development and significant contributions to open source projects are also highly valued in this role
