Overview

Northern Illinois University (NIU) is accepting applications for the position of Head Coach Cross Country. This is a full-time, 12-month position with benefits. This position will be responsible for management and administration of all phases of the women’s cross country program, student-athletes and staff. In addition, this position will provide support to the entire Women’s Track and Field program as assigned by the Head Coach/ Director of Track and Field.

This is a professional coaching position, and all of the duties of the position must be conducted in adherence with the policies, rules and regulations of affiliated national, regional and state intercollegiate athletic associations, the Mid-American conference (or subsequent member conference) and the university.

Northern Illinois University, chartered in 1895, is a comprehensive teaching and research institution with over 19,000 currently enrolled students and houses seven (7) degree-granting colleges—Business, Education, Engineering and Engineering Technology, Health and Human Sciences, Law, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Visual and Performing Arts. Centrally located in DeKalb, Northern Illinois University is 30 miles west of Aurora, 65 miles west of Chicago, 36 miles west of Naperville, and 45 miles southeast of Rockford.

Position Summary

Responsible for management and administration of all phases of the women’s cross country program, student-athletes and staff. In addition, this position will provide support to the entire Women’s Track and Field program as assigned by the Head Coach/ Director of Track and Field.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide an overall positive educational environment for our Student-Athletes conducive to learning, athletic development, social growth, and preparing them for life beyond college;
  • Supervise, in conjunction with the athletic tutoring and advising program, the total academic progress of the team implementing corrective action plans through appropriate staff;
  • Prepare and conduct of all team-related activities including skill instruction, sport strategy and competitive opportunities;
  • Perform team-related administrative duties such as budget, scheduling, travel arrangements, etc.;
  • Supervise the recruitment strategy to attract top level, Division I prospects including identification, assessment, campus visits and implementation of campus resources;
  • Perform both direct and indirect public relations functions including promotion, fund raising, public speaking, community events, and through camps and/or clinics;
  • Responsible for the development, safety and conduct of the student-athletes within the cross country program

Minimum Required Qualifications (SPS)

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Six academic years of collegiate coaching experience in cross country and/or track, with a specialty of coaching distance events in Division I or II.
  • Minimum four years of successful recruiting and retention of quality student-athletes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and adherence to the governing rules and regulations at the Division I or II.

Additional Requirements (SPS)

    • Have a thorough knowledge of NCAA, conference and institutional rules and conduct the program within the regulations.

 

 
  • As a staff member within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, you are responsible for knowledge of and compliance with National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) regulations, both those general in nature and those which apply directly to your position’s responsibilities. Strict adherence to all applicable governing policies, procedures, and regulations of the NCAA is required and is a condition of your employment.
 
  • Ability to communicate with and relate well to the female student-athlete.
 
  • Ability to effectively communicate through oral, written and electronic forms.
 

Preferred Qualifications (SPS)

  • Master’s degree
  • Coaching experience in cross country and/or track, with a specialty of coaching distance events, at the NCAA Division I level
  • Competitive experience in cross country on the university or college level
