The Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) (www.aces.edu) is seeking to fill the position of Assistant Director for Federal Nutrition Programs. The Assistant Director reports to the ACES Associate Director and serves as a member of the ACES System Program Team where they will communicate and collaborate with other Assistant Directors on campus and in the field. The Assistant Director provides visionary leadership to three, multimillion dollar Federal Nutrition Programs, EFNEP, SNAP-Ed, and Thriving Communities, including continued acquisition of internal and external resources. Oversees budgets (~$10M annually), personnel decisions (~82 FTEs), program development, and evaluation processes.

This is a one-year limited-term position. Continued employment is based on the continuation of extramural funding and is subject to renewal on an annual basis. Funding for this program has been continuous for over 50 years.

Responsibilities include:
  • Coordinate program planning based upon needs assessments, available and future capacity, and system priorities and strengths.
  • Guide complex decision making and innovative strategic planning including development of program goals, objectives, and strategies for Federal Nutrition Programs that meet sponsor, AU, and ACES requirements. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional guidelines.
  • Oversee and monitor scope of work, budgets, evaluation, and reporting for subcontracting agencies.
  • Stimulate and facilitate excellence in Federal Nutrition Program personnel through effective performance management, coaching, and mentoring. Maintain direct supervision personnel.
  • Build the capacity of Federal Nutrition Programs by promoting and guiding scholarship and grantsmanship efforts for supervised staff.
  • Provide leadership for marketing and communication strategies that advance the stature of Federal Nutrition Programs.
  • Oversee federal reporting process for each Federal Nutrition Program.
  • Foster coordination efforts between internal and external community nutrition programs.
  • Act as an advocate for the communities and audiences served by Federal Nutrition Programs.
  • Communicate quantitative and qualitative program impacts and meaningful program value internally and externally.
  • Promote and guide intradisciplinary, interdisciplinary and interinstitutional activities. Serve as Federal Nutrition Programs liaison to Extension, University, and to constituents in the state of Alabama and nationally.
