The Office of the Provost is responsible for setting and guiding institutional and budgetary priorities that advance the University’s academic mission. Together with Provosts and senior administrators, the Provost directs and supports the partnerships, collaborations and planning initiatives on three Massachusetts campuses and an international center in Talloires, France.  This team of academic leaders ensures that educational and research programs are of the highest quality by working closely with faculty, staff, alumni, and students to fulfill the University’s goals and aspirations. The Office of the Provost is also responsible for the library system, international and industry collaborations and the ten Boards of Advisors.

What You'll Do

The Special Advisor to the Vice Provost for Innovation is responsible for leading the development of new organizational units that bring together education, research and scholarship in a thematic area at Tufts University as a member of the Office of the Vice Provost for Innovation. Works closely with leadership, faculty and staff to identify thematic areas of opportunity, conceptualizes new units, secures resources to support the creation, planning and launch of a new unit.  Serves as an initial leader as the unit establishes itself as an operating unit.


Essential Functions: 

  • Works with Tufts leadership to identify thematic areas of opportunity that align with the strategic direction of Tufts that would benefit by the creation of a new unit..
  • Leads discovery efforts that identify activity occurring within a specific thematic area that could serve as the foundation for the new unit across Tufts.
  • Performs competitive landscape analysis of similar organizations at other institutions to identify best practices and areas of opportunity to pursue that leverage Tufts unique assets.
  • Creates business cases that articulate the opportunity that a new unit could pursue including articulating a mission, vision and alignment with Tufts goals.
  • Works with other Tufts units to identify central services needed to support new units, both during the planning phase and implementation phase.
  • Works with external partners (e.g., industry, other academics, government organizations) to support the new unit’s ability to execute its mission.
  • Leads the creation of a strategic plan for a new unit that includes mission, objectives and goals including performance metric development.
  • Act as initial leadership as the new unit launches and supports its initial strategic plan.

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

Knowledge and experience typically acquired by:

  • Advanced degree relevant to organizational development, business development or venture building
  • Extensive experience working in academic setting focused on research, education and scholarship
  • Strong leadership skills and experience developing and managing research projects
  • Excellent communication (written, technical, and oral) and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with academic faculty and external partners

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in industry (or in commercializing research) is a plus.

Pay Range

Minimum $181,300.00, Midpoint $226,650.00, Maximum $272,000.00

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
